Chetro Ketl is believed to have last been inhabited by ancestral Puebloans in 1250. The site was rediscovered by New Mexicos Mexican governor in 1823 and later by Lt. James Simpson of the US Army Corps of Engineers. Scholars believe that, given the tools and knowledge available to human civilizations in 900 CE, it would have taken about 500,000 man-hours, 26,000 trees, and 50 million sandstone blocks to build the massive complex at Chetro Ketl.
