Produced by the U.S Mint since 1986, the American Silver Eagles are among the most collected coins in the United States. Each Silver Eagle contains 1 troy oz. of .999 fine silver with a diameter of 40.6 mm and a thickness of 2.98 mm. All edges are reeded with a face value of $1. The American Silver Eagles have been produced at all U.S. Mint locations in San Francisco, West Point and Philadelphia.

As with every American Silver Eagle, the obverse features Walking Liberty, a design created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916. The image depicts a cloaked woman, known as Lady Liberty, striding toward an impending sunrise. An American flag is draped over her right shoulder as she holds a bundle of branches in her left arm. The words LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST along with the date of mintage, 2013, are additionally engraved.

The reverse side of the coin features the work of the U.S. Mint’s chief engraver, John Mercanti. The design, created in 1986 for the express purpose of being featured on each Silver Eagle, is modeled after the Great Seal, which was adopted as America’s Coat of Arms in 1782. The seal portrays an eagle holding a bundle of arrows in one claw and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing war and peace. In its mouth the bird holds a banner which reads E PLURIBUS UNUM or “Out of many, one.” In addition, 13 stars can be seen above the eagle’s head, representing the original 13 colonies. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and 1 OZ FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR” rim the outer edge of the coin.
