It has long been a given of White House tradition for historical preservation to be a key endeavor at America’s Presidential mansion, but that wasn’t always the case. The practice had a specific founder: Caroline Harrison, First Lady of President Benjamin Harrison between the years 1889 and 1892. Known for her ambitious renovations of the mansion and equally ambitious project of collecting and preserving White House china for display, she was an artistically-minded First Lady who was also noted for her commitments to charitable work and women’s equality and who lent her prestige to the founding of the Daughter of the American Revolution. The U.S. Mint paid tribute to her with the 23rd issue in the First Spouse Gold Coin program, the 2012-W Proof US Mint First Spouse Caroline Harrison 1/2 oz Gold Coin.

Obverse

Reverse

An orchid and a set of paintbrushes appear on the reverse side, along with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “$10,” and “1/2 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD.”

History

The Presidential One Dollar Coin Act of 2005 authorized the United States Mint to issue a series of coins to celebrate the legacies of American Presidents, and alongside it the First Spouse Gold Coin Program. Issued between 2007 and 2016, this series commemorated iconic figures ranging from Martha Washington to Barbara Bush in the early 1990s. The twenty-third figure it celebrated, Caroline Harrison, was known for major renovations to the White House that introduced electricity to the mansion and paved the way for the building of the East and West Wings. Her artistic interests in ceramic painting and flowers guided her focus on the historical preservation of White House china, paid tribute on this coin.
