Pay homage to history with the 2013 Yad Vashem 60th Anniversary Silver NIS 1 from the Holy Land Mint.
This .925 sterling silver 14.4 gram coin commemorates the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Yad Vashem, the world’s preeminent Holocaust museum.
“Yad Vashem” means “a memorial and a name.” The phrase comes from the Old Testament, in Isaiah 56:5: “And to them will I give in my house and within my walls a memorial and a name that shall not be cut off.”
Yad Vashem was established in 1953 as the world center for documentation, research, education and commemoration of the tragedy of the Holocaust. It is visited by nearly a million people each year, including world leaders during official visits to Israel.
The 2013 Silver Yad Vashem is also Israel’s 65th Anniversary Coin. It serves as both a reminder of the horrors inflicted upon Jewish people and as a testament to the modern Israel.
The reverse, designed by Yossi Lemel, depicts a striped shirt with a stitched-on Star of David, representing the clothing Jews were forced to wear during imprisonment during the Holocaust. A large Star of David in the background symbolizes the way the Israeli people have continued to survive.
The obverse includes the face value of 1 New Sheqel. The Israel State Emblem is at the top rim. To either side, in English, Hebrew and Arabic, is written “Israel.” The mint mark and mint year are also denoted.
