Obverse

The obverse side of the 2014 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin comes with a right-profile bust of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fourth-generation effigy of the Queen from the Royal Mint of England and was designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. This image depicts the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, a tiara gifted to Queen Mary, the grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions on this side of the coin read Elizabeth II, Australia, and 1 Dollar.

Reverse

On the reverse field of 2014 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins comes the first design in the series as created by John Mercanti. The former 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Mercanti developed a powerful image of the eagle swooping in quickly toward its perch. The birds wings are swept back behind its frame as its powerful talons reach out to clutch the branches of its perch found on the design of the design field. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle and 2014 1 oz 999 Silver.

History

The 2014 Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin is the debut release of the series. It has .999 pure silver content and had a limited mintage of only 50,000 silver coins. In 2015, this same design was repeated on the reverse, but the Perth Mint did make a change in removing the mintage cap on the coins. In 2016-2017, a new design was debuted that was shared across both date marks. In 2018, the coins enjoyed a bump up to .9999 pure silver content and started using new designs on an annual basis with no repeats.
