The creative team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby brought the Avengers to the pages of Marvel Comics more than six decades ago, with four of the mightiest heroes on Earth forming the core of the original roster and the heart and soul of the team through many years afterward. The New Zealand Mint brought these heroes to discerning coin collectors, fans, and investors with the 2014 Niue Marvel Avengers 1 oz Silver 4-Coin Proof Set, now available from Provident Metals.
The 2014 Niue Marvel Avengers Silver 4-Coin Proof Set celebrates the original quartet of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes with a group of colorized, brilliant proof-quality collectibles. Each of these coins comes packaged separately in a plastic capsule and its own tin, bearing a vivid image of the hero on the lid, with a series of accessories: four-color character bio cards, stainless steel die-cast Certificates of Authenticity, and lapel pins. -The full set ships fully insured in a foam insert within an oversized lunch box.
Each coin’s obverse side features a profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, verifying them legal tender. This is surrounded by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “TWO DOLLARS,” and “2014.”
Each coin’s reverse side bears a brilliant colorized portrait of an Avenger, each in a distinctive action pose. Captain America appears wielding his shield, the Hulk smashes through a wall, Thor flourishes his divine hammer Mjolnir, and Iron Man can be seen soaring high above the Earth with a hand extended and ready to fire a force beam.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made the Avengers into a major pop culture presence, but they were popular in the pages of comic books long before, with The Avengers being one of Marvel Comics’ best-selling titles consistently across decades. Each of the four founding heroes had made their own earlier debuts — with the oldest and the First Avenger being Captain America, who first appeared in 1941 — but their team up in 1963 brought them to a new level and made them into household names for kids of all ages across generations since.
