History

The US silver half dollar coin debuted the new Kennedy design in 1964. This was the last year of 90% silver coining in the US for circulation coins. Kennedys bust and the modified presidential seal were created by Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro, respectively, in 1962 for Kennedys presidential appreciation medal. Roberts served as the 9^th Chief Engraver of the United States from 1948 to 1964, and was succeeded after retiring by Gasparro who served as the 10^th Chief Engraver from 1965 to 1981.
