Obverse

On the obverse field of 2016 Austrian Philharmonic 1/25 oz Gold Coins is the Great Pipe Organ. This massive musical instrument is a fixed structure within the Musikverein. This building is also known as the Golden Concert Hall and is located in the Innere Stadt neighborhood of Vienna, the national capital of Austria.

Reverse

The reverse side of 2016 Austrian Philharmonic 1/25 oz Gold Coins bears the image of eight distinct musical instruments. Each one of these instruments is commonly used by the members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The design elements are focused on a cello in the center with four violins in total, two on each side, flanking it. In the background, there is a harp, a bassoon, and a French horn.

History

Austrian Philharmonic Coins debuted in 1989 with a 1 oz and 1/4 oz gold coins. The series expanded in 1991 with a 1/10 oz coin, in 1994 with a 1/2 oz coin, and finally in 2014 with a 1/25 oz gold coin. This weight was meant to be commemorative that year for the 25th anniversary of the series, but was so popular the Austrian Mint has continued producing it each year.
