The Birds of Prey series from the Royal Canadian Mint quickly became way more popular than most expected when it first launched. The program ended in 2015 after a two year-run containing four designs. Many investors and collectors were frustrated that they were unable to get a coin for themselves. The RCM has released a new reverse proof series with low mintage numbers that is bringing these popular designs back. Right now, you can get the 2016 Reverse Proof Canadian Peregrine Falcon 1 oz Silver Coin from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The Royal Canadian Mint released the first coin in the original Birds of Prey Series in February of 2014. The Peregrine Falcon design led the charge. Future coins were released in August and February for the following two years. This series is based on the Birds of Prey Series, but all of the coins are struck in reverse proof.
Reverse proof coins are different from regular proof coins in that the design fields are deeply mirrored, while the backgrounds are frosted. Proof coins are the opposite.
Obverse
On the obverse of all modern Canadian coinage, you will find the image of Queen Elizabeth II. She is showcased in right-profile relief like in many of the other designs that have been created of Her Majesty. This image was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt.
Reverse
The reverse face of the coin displays the peregrine falcon as designed by Emily Damstra. The falcon is in flight descending upon its prey.
History
These coins were struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, which is a world leader in gold and silver bullion products. The RCM opened in 1908 in response to the gold rush in the Yukon territories. Now, the mint has two facilities, one in Ottawa and one in Winnipeg.
