Obverse
The obverse of the coin features a recognizable image of Queen Elizabeth II. The effigy was designed by Ian-Rank Broadley in a contest to create an image to update the queen’s portrait for use on coins. The image was used on coins from 1998 through part of 2015. The queen’s portrait is underscored by a small inscription of IRB to indicate the artist. It’s also surrounded by the inscriptions ELIZABETH II, 20 DOLLARS, COOK ISLANDS and 2016.

Reverse
The reverse side includes the same effigy of the queen, in part because this was the legal portrait of Her Majesty that could be used on minted coins at the time. To differentiate it from the image on the obverse, the reverse is shown in slightly more detail. It’s surrounded by floral designs that form a circle along with the inscription HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY.

History
The history of the queen’s effigy on coins is an interesting one that follows the monarch through various ages in her life. The first coins depicting Queen Elizabeth II were issued in 1953 and included a portrait of the young monarch. In 1968, a new effigy appeared, depicting a more mature queen and including a crown. The portrait was updated again for coins in 1985 and 1998. Current coins bear an effigy designed by Jody Clark that was unveiled in 2015.
