Obverse
The obverse of 2016 Great Britain Sovereigns features a right-profile depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is the longest-reigning monarch in English history and features here in the fifth design of her reign. Created in 2015 by Jody Clark, this portrait shows the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. This is the first appearance of this effigy on the Great Britain Sovereign. The field includes inscriptions of ELIZABETH II and DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2016 Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coin is a depiction of St. George slaying the dragon. The design shows St. George on horseback in right-profile relief. In this design from 1817, St. George slays the dragon using a long spear. The inscriptions on this side of the coin read 2016 and include the BP initials of the designer, Benedetto Pistrucci.
