The Great Britain Sovereign is one of the most consistent and well-known bullion coins in the world. Originally issued in 1817 as a circulation gold piece with a face value of 20 shillings, today the Great Britain Sovereign is issued by the Royal Mint each year as a gold bullion specimen for investors. Provident Metals currently has 2016 Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coins available to you for purchase online.
When you purchase one of these 2016 Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coins online at Provident Metals, you will receive your coins in individual protective flips. Each one is available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Though the coins maintain an attractive visual appearance, it is acceptable for BU coins to showcase common flaws and errors from the coining process. Great Britain Sovereigns are made with 22-karat gold, indicating 91.67% gold content and a remaining balance of copper.
The obverse of 2016 Great Britain Sovereigns features a right-profile depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is the longest-reigning monarch in English history and features here in the fifth design of her reign. Created in 2015 by Jody Clark, this portrait shows the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. This is the first appearance of this effigy on the Great Britain Sovereign. The field includes inscriptions of ELIZABETH II and DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF.
On the reverse of the 2016 Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coin is a depiction of St. George slaying the dragon. The design shows St. George on horseback in right-profile relief. In this design from 1817, St. George slays the dragon using a long spear. The inscriptions on this side of the coin read 2016 and include the BP initials of the designer, Benedetto Pistrucci.
The design on the reverse of the coins in the Great Britain Sovereign Gold Series is as iconic as any in the world. The design has been in use with relative consistency since 1817. It debuted on the first sovereigns and was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci.
