From the American Revolution to World War II, Fort Moultrie was vital in the Eastern Seaboard coastal defenses of the United States. The Continental Armys 2nd South Carolina Regiment garrisoned the fort during the early days of the American Revolution and fought bravely to hold the fort against a British bombardment. The famed Battle of Sullivans Island features as the reverse design for the South Carolina ATB coin. Today, you have the chance to purchase 2016-P Burnished ATB Fort Moultrie 5 oz Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Fort Moultrie was constructed using the iconic palmetto trees found throughout South Carolina and the American South. The pliable nature of the palmetto made it the perfect medium for building the fort, as the Americans would discover during the Battle of Sullivans Island. As the British Navy bombarded the fort from the sea, the cannonballs of the Royal Navy vessels bounced off the walls of Fort Moultrie and allowed American forces to withstand the assault much longer.
Obverse
On the obverse face of 2016-P Burnished ATB Fort Moultrie 5 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of President George Washington. Created in 1932, this bust of President Washington has been on the circulation quarter since that time. It was designed by John Flanagan based on a 1786 sculpture of Washingtons bust and placed on the quarter to mark 200 years since Washingtons birth in 1732.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2016-P Burnished ATB Fort Moultrie 5 oz Silver Coin comes with an image of William Jasper. During the course of the Battle of Sullivans Island, the 2nd South Carolina Regiments flag was blasted off its pole by a cannonball from the Royal Navy. Sergeant Jasper risked his life to retrieve the colors and hoist the flag back above the ramparts of the fort on a temporary staff.
History
William Jasper was a Sergeant in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment who survived the Battle of Sullivans Island continued to serve in the Continental Army through the war until 1779 when he was mortally wounded while participating in the Siege of Savannah in Georgia.
