2016 was a momentous year for the Chinese Panda bullion program from the Chinese Mint. Though not an anniversary year, it was nonetheless important as the Chinese Mint marked the transition from Troy ounces as the unit of weight for its popular bullion coins to Grams. Among the coins offered in 2016 were a collection of gold and silver proof coins in large gram weights. Today, you have the chance to buy the 2016 Proof Chinese Panda 150 Gram Silver Coin online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 2016 issue year included several first-ever Proof Chinese Panda products. The silver series included this new 150 Gram coin, while the gold series offered several weights for the year that included 50 Gram, 100 Gram, 150 Gram, and 1 Kilogram weights. All this was done to mark the first release of the primary bullion series of coins with the new Gram weights.
Obverse
On the obverse field of the new 2016 Proof Chinese Panda 150 Gram Silver Coin is the depiction of a Giant Panda. In this years exclusive design, the Giant Panda is shown perched out on a tree trunk or branch that extends over a small body of water. Whether it has climbed out there to relax, stare into the water, or was lured by something it saw, no one can tell. But the Giant Panda does look at peace as it clings to the tree and gazes downward.
Reverse
The reverse face of 2016 Proof Chinese Panda 150 Gram Silver Coins has the same design the series has used from the beginning. Here, you will see the facade of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This building is located in the Temple of Heaven Complex and was built between 1406 and 1420 as a Taoist religious site within the city of Beijing. Everyday citizens and emperors alike would visit the complex to pray for the country and, in the case of this building, pray for bountiful harvests to feed the people.
History
Chinese Panda Silver Coins were first offered as 1 Troy oz .999 pure silver specimens in 1989. Though the series launched in 1983, it was not a standardized bullion coin for several more years. The coins issued in 1983, 1984, and 1985 were proof specimens with 27 Grams of .900 silver content. No coin was issued in 1986, and the 1987 and 1988 coins had a 1 Troy oz weight, but only used sterling silver (.925) content.
