The Lunar Rooster is the 10th design released in the Lunar Series II. This series of coins depicts a new animal from the Chinese Lunar, or Zodiac, calendar. The Lunar calendar is a 12-year cycle that is used in traditional Chinese culture.
Obverse
The obverse of each of the 2017 Australian Lunar Rooster 1 oz Silver 4-Coin Type Set Collection features the 1998 portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. Her Majesty has been featured on the obverse side of Australian and commonwealth coinage since she took the throne in 1952.
Reverse
The reverse design of the 2017 Australian Lunar Rooster 1 oz Silver 4-Coin Type Set Collection features the beautifully imagined Year of the Rooster design released for the year 2017. The design features a rooster poised on one leg, with an alert appearance as a hen and three baby chicks scratch in the dirt for food. The gilded version of this coin features a 24-karat gold finish on only the rooster, with the colorized coin bringing the rooster, hen, and chicks to life with brilliant colors.
The Perth Mint has the distinction of being the oldest operating mint in Australia. Founded in 1899, the Perth Mint is owned by the Western Australian state government.
