This coin is a gilded coin. This means that it features a 24-karat gold layer that is applied to one or more of the design element. On the 2017 Australian Kangaroo 1 oz Silver Coin, the gilded finish is seen applied to the image of the jumping kangaroo.

Obverse

The obverse design of the 2017 Australian Kangaroo 1 oz Silver Coin features the right-profile portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait is the fourth-generation of Her Majesty to appear on coinage across the commonwealth since she took the throne in 1952. This effigy was designed by famed sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998. Her Majestys name, Elizabeth II is engraved on the coin along with Australia and the face value of the coin.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 2017 Australian Kangaroo 1 oz Silver Coin features an image of the iconic red kangaroo, caught in mid hop, making its way across the Outback. The sunburst in the background adds an interesting depth to the design. Male kangaroos have incredibly powerful hind legs, which allows them to launch themselves great distances with each hop. They also use their hind legs to take on other males when competing for the attention of the females. The males lean back on their tales and kick fiercely, almost appearing to be boxing each other.

The Perth Mint is the oldest independent state-owned mint in Australia. It was established in 1899 as the third and last Royal Mint under British rule. Today, the Perth Mint is independent of the Royal Australian Mint.
