The unicorn is shown rearing up on its back legs, with its front hooves above the Royal Banner of Scotland.

The Unicorn of Scotland was first brought to life by William I, in the 12^thcentury. It was initially intended to be one of the earliest forms of the Scottish coat of arms. The unicorn serves as an enduring symbol of strength and beauty for the Scottish people. When the thrones of Scotland and England were united by James I, the unicorn was selected as the icon that would join the Lion of England on the Royal Arms.
