Libertads are made by the National Mint of Mexico (or Casa de Moneda de Mexico), established in 1535, according to the highest purity and quality standards. The first Silver Libertad was produced in 1982, based on the Centenario gold coin that was made from 1921 to 1947. The design featured the Mexican angel of independence, Winged Victoria (or Victory). She held a laurel wreath and a broken chain to celebrate Mexico’s freedom from Spain.

The modern Libertad features a series of seals on the obverse. In the center is the Mexican national seal, which pictures an eagle standing atop a cactus carrying a snake in its beak. An inscription on top of the seal says “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.” Ten additional seals encircle the central seal, representing the Mexican provinces.

The Victory Angel is the focal point of the coin’s reverse. She is positioned between two volcanoes called Popocatepeti and Iztaccuhuati, named after two lovers from pre-Columbian lore. The inscriptions read “1/4 ONZA,” “PLATA PURA,” “2017,” and “LEY .999.”
