The bridge took a total of eight years to build between 1886 and 1894. The bridge spans the River Thames near the Tower of London and is a combination of a bascule bridge and suspension bridge.

History

The central portion of the Tower Bridge contains the bascule element with a portion that can be raised to allow for boat traffic to pass under the bridge. When this span is closed, the bridge has a clearance above the waterline of just 28 feet that expands to 139 feet when the span is opened for traffic.
