  Obverse

  The obverse of each coin features the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The inscriptions ELIZABETH II, CANADA 2018, D.G. REGINA (Latin for “By the Grace of God, Queen”) and 20 DOLLARS are also engraved on the obverse.

  Reverse

  The reverse of each coin is designed by Jori van der Linde in a mosaic art style. The first coin in the series features the profile view of an antlered Canadian caribou in front of an expansive Canadian mountain range. The second coin features the profile view of a grizzly bear beside a salmon-rich river with today’s catch in its mouth. And the third coin features a cougar’s piercing gaze as glimpsed through a clearing in the woods. Each animal’s iconic features are re-created through complex engraving that divides the image into segments resembling pieces of vibrant tile. From the dark opaque colors of the animal to the glassy hues of its surroundings, the Royal Canadian Mint’s proprietary Color Mosaic technology gives each color on the reverse a varying degree of translucence, like light filtering through colored glass – resulting in a beautiful work of art to hold in hand.
