Obverse
On the obverse, 2018 Proof British Queens Beast Dragon Coins boast the fifth-generation British portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 2015 by Jody Clark, it depicts the Queen at the age of 89 in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem crown, also known as the Royal Diadem. This stunning crown has a total of 320 carats of diamonds and is traditionally worn by the monarch at the state opening of parliament.
Reverse
The reverse side of 2018 Proof British Queens Beast Dragon Coins features a design of the arms of Llewelyn ap Griffith. The last native Prince of Wales, Griffith used a coat of arms with a quartered shield that had a single leopard in each quadrant. The shield is supported by the fiery red dragon.
History
The Red Dragon of Wales comes to Queen Elizabeth II through King Henry VII, the first monarch of the House of Tudor. Henry VII used the red dragon on his battle standard at the Battle of Bosworth in which his victory ended the House of Yorks rule. Henry VII claimed Welsh heritage through his father, Owen Tudor.
