Designed by Adolph Weinman, the obverse features Lady Liberty walking towards a rising sun. Her shoulders are wrapped in the American flag and she holds laurel branches in her arm. This classic design is paired with inscriptions of “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” along with the year of issue.
The iconic shield and eagle is seen on the reverse, designed by John Mercanti. A bald eagle with outstretched wings carries a banner in its beak that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” A striped shield rests in front of the great bird, while 13 stars representative of the original colonies sit above its head. Also included are inscriptions of the coin’s weight, purity, and legal tender value.
The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) grades the quality of coins according to a strict set of guidelines. A grade of Mint State 69 refers to a coin that is in near perfect condition. Once graded, coins are sonically sealed in plastic holders to preserve the condition in which they were graded. The label on this coin’s holder denotes Early Releases, which means that the coin was sent to the NGC during its first 30 days of issue.
