When the United States Mint introduced the American Eagle Gold Coins in 1986, there were five total weights available. The Brilliant Uncirculated coins come in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold, with an additional Proof coin in 1 oz gold. The fractional-ounce gold coins were introduced over the course of the next two years. These 1/2 oz gold coins came first in 1987, followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins in 1988.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 2018-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins is a depiction of Lady Liberty. Created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the design features a front-facing image of Liberty. The artwork was designed at a time when the United States Mint was revitalizing all of the coins in circulation with images reflective of the nations growing prominence on the international stage. Liberty is depicted with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. As rays of sunshine emerge behind her figure, a ring of 50 stars encircles the design field.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 2018-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coin includes the image of a family of American bald eagles. Exclusive to the American Eagle Gold Coins, this design comes from Miley Busiek and shows a male eagle in flight above the nest as a female guards a young hatchling in the nest.

History

Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins have traditionally been one of the lower-minted coins in the series. Like the Brilliant Uncirculated version of the coin, the 1/2 oz gold coin has lower mintages in proof than its competitors. The 2015 coin, for example, had a mintage less than half that of the 1 oz gold coin.
