The American Eagle Palladium Coin debuted in 2017 with a mintage of just 15,000 coins in a Brilliant Uncirculated specimen. The United States Mint followed that up in 2018 with the release of these Proof American Eagle 1 oz Palladium Coins. No BU version was offered this year, with just 15,000 proof specimens produced. The 2019 release of the American Eagle Palladium Series would follow suit with a Reverse Proof American Eagle Palladium coin but boasted a higher mintage of 30,000 coins in total.

Obverse

Adolph A. Weinmans iconic design of Winged Liberty is featured on the obverse of the 2018-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Palladium Coin. The design is known as Winged Liberty, but when it was used on the US dime from 1916 to 1945 it was known as the Mercury Dime or Mercury Liberty image. This is a result of the resemblance between Liberty wearing this winged Phrygian cap and the Roman messenger god Mercury. The coin includes inscriptions of Liberty, In God We Trust, AW, and 2017 on this side.

Reverse

An American bald eagle is featured on the reverse face of the 2018-W Proof American Eagle Palladium Coin. This is the same design that Weinman used on the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal from 1907. It shows a bald eagle clutching a sapling in its talons at the edge of a cliff. Inscriptions on this include United State of America, $25, 1 oz Pd .9995 Fine, and E Pluribus Unum.

History

The American Eagle Palladium Coin completes the American Eagle Series in all four major metals: gold, silver, and platinum. The United States Mint has seen a positive reaction to the introduction of the American Palladium Eagle through its first three years of issue.

Ordering

These 2018-W Proof American Eagle Palladium Coins earned PF69 certifications. Coins in this condition have full, original mint luster with no more than two minor detracting flaws present. Those flaws are limited in nature to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be located outside of the primary focal points of the coin. The included UCAM label means ultra-cameo. This refers to the presence of strong, frosted designs and deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.
