The American Liberty Gold Series debuted in 2017 to mark the 225^th anniversary of the founding of the United States Mint. Libertys figure has featured on countless American coins over the past two centuries, but never as she is seen in the new American Liberty collection of 24-karat gold coins. With new images of Liberty from US Mint Artistic Infusion Program artists, this series breaks the mold.

Obverse

Depicted as an African-American woman for the first time in national history, she has her braided hair up in a bun with a crown of stars on her head. Inscriptions on this face include Liberty and In God We Trust, along with the initials of the two artists behind the design and a date mark.

Reverse

The reverse face of 2018-W Proof American Liberty Gold Coins comes with a depiction of the American bald eagle flying through the sky as it prepares to strike its prey. Inscriptions on this side include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, 1/10 oz .9999 Fine Gold, and 10 Dollars. You will also find inscriptions of the initials for the two designers and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.

History

This is the first time in American history that a vision of Liberty was not created in the traditional Greco-Roman imagery, and the first time a person of color was the inspiration for the image of the national female personification.
