Obverse

The obverse of all American Eagle Gold Coins has the image of Lady Liberty as created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The image was designed in 1907, and it is one of the first images of Lady Liberty other than those that were inspired by either Greek or Roman goddesses. On the coin, she is seen with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in the left hand.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the American Eagle Gold Coins, there is a design showcasing an American bald eagle family. The image, created by Miley Busiek in 1986, shows a male eagle flying over his nest where a female eagle guards a hatchling.

History

The American Eagle Gold Coins were first introduced by the United States Mint in 1986. The U.S. hadnt issued any gold coins since Franklin D. Roosevelt was President. During the Great Depression, Roosevelt removed the nation from the gold standard and collected gold bullion coins to bolster the gold reserves for the country.
