Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief without a crown on her head in a 2003 design from Susanna Blunt. In 1990, the Royal Canadian Mint began to use monarch portraits from Canadian designers rather than continuing on with Royal Mint of England effigies of the Queen. The 2003 design from Susanna Blunt is just the second from a Canadian designer, the fourth overall on Canadian coins during the Queens reign, and the first since the reign of King George VI to feature the monarch without a crown.

Reverse

A sugar maple leaf is shown on the reverse side of 2019 Colorized Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coins. The sugar maple leaf design shown here is from Walter Ott and was developed in 1979 for use on the Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold coin. This side of the coin has the colorization and shows the sugar maple transitioning from its beautiful, rich summer green to the cooler summers of fall. While the core of the leaf remains green, yellow, orange, and red are invading from the inside out to surround the green.

History

These coins have radial lines in the background field on both sides of the coin with a laser micro-engraved maple leaf privy on the reverse. These are security features the Royal Canadian Mint began to introduce after 2014.
