Reintroduced in 2017, the Netherlands Lion Dollar is now a popular bullion series from the Royal Dutch Mint. The coins offer varying recreations of the Dutch Lion Dollar first issued in 1575 by Holland. Each year, the Royal Dutch Mint has offered a slight twist on the Lion Dollar design based on actual images used by the Royal Dutch Mint over the course of time. Today, you have the opportunity to get 2019 Netherlands Lion Dollar 1 oz Silver Coins online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective plastic flip!
  • 3rd year of release in the Netherlands Lion Dollar Series!
  • Limited mintage of just 15,000 silver coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver in uncirculated condition.
  • A rampant lion features on the obverse of the coin.
  • A Dutch knight is found in support of the coat of arms of the Netherlands.

The province of Holland was the first to issue a Lion Dollar, which was then known in Dutch as the leeuwendaalder. The coins were issued by Holland as the province struggled for its independence. In the decades to come after that, the Lion Dollar would go on to be issued by six of the seven Dutch provinces and a number of independent major cities in Western Europe.

Obverse

A rampant lion features on the obverse of 2019 Netherlands Lion Dollar 1 oz Silver Coins. This design was first issued by the Royal Dutch Mints predecessor in 1651. The rampant lion is found here in left-profile relief with inscriptions around the design rim that read Confidens.Dno.Non.Movetvr. This inscription was the motto of the United Provinces and translates into English as Who trusts in the Lord is not moved.

Reverse

In the reverse design of the 2019 Netherlands Lion Dollar is a depiction of a Dutch knight supporting the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The knight is based on a 17th-century knight and it supports the Dutch Republic Lion on a shield. The shield includes a rampant lion that first appeared on the badge of the Union of Utrecht. It is the basis for the coat of arms for the modern Kingdom of the Netherlands and Belgium, with the latter formerly part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

History

The original Dutch Lion Dollars were issued to help facilitate export trade in the provinces of the Netherlands. The original coins were authorized to feature 427.16 grains of .750 fine silver and meant to be a more affordable coin for merchants to use in paying foreign debts compared to more expensive rijksdaalders.
