It was in July of 1969 that three astronauts were launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida, headed to the moon. It took four days for the crew of the Apollo 11 to reach the surface of the moon once they took off from Cape Canaveral. Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin spent just 21.5 hours on the surface of the moon, where they collected samples and snapped some of the most important photographs we have of the moon and of the earth itself.

Upon the 15^thanniversary of the moon landing, the Statue of Liberty was put under restoration in order to better preserve her against the elements. Copper taken from the statue was used in the construction of 15-inch replicas that were later sent into space with the Discovery shuttle in 1985. One statue was later melted into centennial seals of Liberty, which have now been used in this interesting coin.

Obverse

The obverse design of the 2019 Proof Niue Moon Landing 50th Anniversary 1 oz Silver Coin features the fourth-generation right-profile portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This design was created by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998 for the Royal Mint of England. It has been used on coinage across the commonwealth for many years. On each side of the coin is an inset capsule carrying copper from Liberty statues that were sent into space with Discovery in 1985.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 2019 Proof Niue Moon Landing 50th Anniversary 1 oz Silver Coin features the surface of the moon, with a single footprint from one of the members of the Apollo 11 crew. In the background of the image is the American flag, along with the earth. Also pictured are a green comet and a galaxy. The reverse side of the coin features the inset capsule with a piece of copper that has been into space.
