Obverse

On the obverse face of each of these coins, you will see the Spanish ship, Victoria. It is considered a carrack, because it has three or four-masted sails, which makes it perfect for ocean voyages. This was the only ship in the fleet of five that would complete the voyage around the world.

Reverse

The official seal of Rwanda is featured on the reverse side of the coin. On the seal, you will see a traditional hut of the Banyarwanda people. The design is flanked by warrior battle shields, and you can see the national motto and face value of the coin inscribed on the reverse of these coins.

History

This ship was built in the Basque area of Spain between 1518 and 1519, and it was commissioned by King Charles I of Spain. After the ship was completed in 1519, it was gifted to Ferdinand Magellan along with four other ships for an expedition to circumnavigate the world.
