Prior to 2006, the United States Mint had never issued a gold coin with a level of purity beyond 22-karat, or .9167. In 2006, that all changed with the introduction of the American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin. The first-ever 24-karat gold coin from the US Mint, the American Buffalo Gold Coin remains the only annual-issue gold coin with .9999 pure gold content. Today, you have the chance to purchase the 2020 American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a protective plastic flip or a mint tube of 20 coins!
  • 15th year of release for the American Buffalo 1 oz gold coin!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold in BU condition.
  • An indigenous tribal figure in right-profile relief is on the obverse.
  • The American bison is depicted on the reverse of the coin.

From 1794 to 1933, the United States Mint issued most of its gold coins with just 90% gold content and a balance of copper. In 1834, gold purity was temporarily lowered from its original 22-karat content to a level below 90%. By 1837, all gold coins from the US Mint had 90% gold content with a balance of copper included in the core. In 1933, all gold coin production halted in the US. In 1986, when gold coins returned with the American Eagle 1 oz gold coin, 22-karat gold was the choice. The American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin changed that all.

Obverse

The obverse of 2020 American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coins includes the right-profile portrait of an indigenous tribal figure. James Earle Fraser created this design in 1913 by combining the facial features of three real-life indigenous leaders of the era. This figure has braided hair with a feather woven in. Liberty and a date mark are inscribed on this side.

Reverse

For the reverse, 2020 American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coins depict a large bison in left-profile relief standing on a mound of dirt. Fraser also created this image in 1913 and used Black Diamond, a resident bison of the Central Park Zoo in New York City, as the inspiration for his design.

History

The US Mint introduced the American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin in 2006 with 24-karat gold. It was the first time a coin of this purity was produced. Other commemorative gold coins in 24-karat gold have since been issued, but the American Buffalo is the only coin issued every year with 24-karat gold.
