There is a long history of rum-running in the Caribbean Sea, and it has nothing to do with the tasty island-themed cocktail popular on cruises and in tropical bars across the region. As the rum industry boomed on several Caribbean islands, the colonial powers of Britain and Spain began to tax the alcohol as it entered and left various ports throughout the region. The British, in particular, were known for deploying revenue cutters to ensure all merchants were abiding by laws and paying taxes on the beverage. Naturally, a bootleg industry emerged.

History

Rum runners were most recently used in the Caribbean Sea in the 20^th century when the United States imposed its Prohibition laws. As alcohol was illegal to consume in the United States, it also became illegal to produce. Producers in the Caribbean began running rum to the US once again during this period of history.
