Obverse

The obverse design of the 2020 Australian Kangaroo 1 oz Silver Coin features the right-profile bust of Queen Elizabeth II. This bust of Her Majesty was developed in 2015 by Jody Clark and first appeared on Royal Mint of England coins in 2016. The design came to Australian coins in 2018 as the sixth-generation Australian effigy. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include Elizabeth II, Australia, and 1 Dollar.

Reverse

On the reverse face of the 2020 Australian Kangaroo Silver Coin is a depiction of two kangaroos. The mother and its young joey are featured in the Outback with both animals on alert for movement or a possible threat in the distance. The inscriptions on this side include Australian Kangaroo, 2020 1 oz 9999 Silver, and the P mint mark of the Perth Mint. This side of the coin also has a beautiful, thin layer of 24-karat gold on the image of the two kangaroos to create impressive visual contrast between the kangaroos and the rest of the design field.

History

The Perth Mint was founded in 1899 as the third and final Royal Mint branch facility in Australia behind the Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint. Unlike its predecessors, the Perth Mint survived the federation movement and eventual independence of Australia to become a state-owned mint of the government of Western Australia.
