The story of St. George slaying the dragon is not just well-known in British society, but it is in fact well-known and celebrated by Christians around the world. Early versions of the story say that St. George actually encountered the dragon in a town in the modern-day nation of Libya. Whatever the truth behind the legend, you cant help but marvel at the bravery. Right now, you can buy the 2020 British Valiant 10 oz Silver Coin online from Provident Metals.
Your 2020 British Valiant 10 oz Silver Coin is presented in this listing with an individual protective plastic capsule or a box of 15 coins from the Royal Mint of England. The coins are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
The obverse field of the 2020 British Valiant 10 oz Silver Coin bears the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here at the age of 89 in a design created in 2015 by Jody Clark, the youngest artist to develop a monarch portrait for the mint. The Queen wears the George IV State Diadem. This impressive crown was commissioned in the first year of George IVs reign and includes 1,333 diamonds with a staggering weight of 300 karats. The crown is traditionally worn only for the State Opening of Parliament.
On the reverse side of the 2020 British Valiant 10 oz Silver Coin, St. George rides hard into battle against the dragon on horseback. With his shield at his side and no helmet on his head, George levels his spear and strikes the dragon in the neck.
The iconography and tradition behind the story of St. George and the dragon predates Christianity and is believed to have its roots in the cavalry of Thrace and, later, the Roman Empire. While George died in the year 303 AD, versions of the story in which he slays a dragon to save a town and its young princess dont proliferate in Western society until the 11th century at the earliest. Western Christians brought the tale of St. George slaying a dragon back to Europe following the Third Crusades in the Middle East.
