One of the many annual-release bullion collections from the Royal Canadian Mint available outside of the Canadian Maple Leaf Series is the Canadian Polar Bear. The Canadian Polar Bear release features fractional-ounce coins in silver and gold each year, with new images of the polar bear species on the reverse. The silver range typically includes a 1/2 oz coin, while the gold range offers a 1/10 oz coin. Right now, you can buy 2020 Canadian Polar Bear 1/10 oz Gold Coins online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Provident metals is pleased to offer you the 2020 Canadian Polar Bear 1/10 oz Gold Coin online in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coins in this release come with individual protective plastic flips and boast the latest design from the Royal Canadian Mint to grace the Canadian Polar Bear series in the gold bullion range.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2020 Canadian Polar Bear 1/10 oz Gold Coins depicts Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured here in right-profile relief in the fourth-generation depiction to grace Canadian coins. This design was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt and is the first during her reign to exclude a crown from the portrait. Ms. Blunt is only the second Canadian artist ever to create a monarch portrait for Canadian coins. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include Elizabeth II, D.G. Regina, and 5 Dollars.
Reverse
On the reverse field of the 2020 Canadian Polar Bear Gold Coin is an image of the powerful polar bear. In this design, the bear is standing on its massive hind legs with its front paws resting on a block of ice for balance. The bear is up on its hind legs surveying the Arctic landscape around it. The background includes the open Arctic waters with a snow-covered mountain range in the distance. The inscriptions on this face read Canada 2019, 9999, and Fine Gold 1/10 oz Or Pur.
History
Polar bears were first described by non-indigenous Canadians in 1774 when Constantine John Phipps noted the presence of the species in the Arctic Circle. Phipps chose the name Ursus maritimus for the polar bears scientific name, which translates from Latin as maritime bear. The polar bear diverged from the broader brown bear species some 400,000 years ago and adapted to its Arctic Circle environment with webbed padding in its paws, among other features, to enable it to swim from one ice shelf to the next and purse seals in the water. Seals form the backbone of the polar bears diet.
