History

The game of basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith. Naismith was born in 1861 in Canadas Ontario province. During his youth, he studied theology while also proving to be quite the athlete. As such, he was later appointed as the physical education instructor at Springfield College in Massachusetts. Naismith was tasked with creating a game that was both safe and exciting for indoor winter play. Inspired by soccer, football, and hockey, Naismith constructed his own rules for what would become the universally beloved sport of basketball.
