The last time the Philadelphia Mint produced the bullion version of the American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin came in 1999 and 2000 as the coins transitioned from the original coining facility at the San Francisco Mint to the West Point Mint. With increased demand and a temporary shutdown of the West Point Mint in March 2020, the Philadelphia Mint was pressed back into service to release an emergency issue of 2020 American Eagle Silver Coins. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase perfect condition 2020-P 1 American Eagle 1 oz Silver coins online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Historically, the American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins have been struck by three mints in the US Mint system. The San Francisco Mint struck the coins from 1986 to 1998. The Philadelphia Mint struck the coins in 1999 and 2000, and the West Point Mint has handled all coining since 2001. At times of intense demand, the US Mint opens up previous mints for supplemental, emergency coining. The events of March 2020 required the US Mint to do so once again.
Obverse
On the obverse side of 2020-P American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of Walking Liberty. This historic design was first created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman for the US half dollar and was used on that denomination until 1947. In 1986, the image was resurrected for use on the national bullion American Eagle Silver coin.
Reverse
The reverse face of 2020 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins bears the iconic heraldic eagle of the United States. First created in 1794 by Robert Scot, 1st Chief Engraver of the United States, the design featured on the American Eagle Silver Coins is the latest modernization of that design and was completed in 1986 by John Mercanti, the man who served as 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 2006 to 2010.
History
Demand for 2020 American Eagle Silver Coins surged amidst extreme market volatility in March 2020. The West Point Mint not only announced a sellout of on-hand American Eagles in the midst of that demand, it was also forced to shut down for several weeks. For the first time since 2000, the Philadelphia Mint was pressed into high-volume production of American Eagle Silver Coins.
