Obverse
The obverse design of the 2020 Proof Illinois Peoria Tiger Salamander 1 oz Silver Coin features a member of the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma. Historically speaking, this tribe was once found reaching across Illinois, Ohio, Missouri and Michigan. However, like many tribes, they were forcibly removed to the territory that is now Oklahoma. The Peoria tribe was once a part of Illinois Confederation, which is collective of around a dozen tribes in the region, who all spoke a similar dialect. Engravings on the obverse of the coin include Peoria, the year of release, the face value, the weight and metal purity of the coin.
Reverse
The reverse design of the 2020 Proof Illinois Peoria Tiger Salamander 1 oz Silver Coin features a detailed image of the spotted tiger salamander. Also known as a mole salamander, this species is quickly recognized by its blotchy and colorful skin that includes interesting hues of black, green and grey. The words Illinois Tiger Salamander, America and Jamul Sovereign Nation are engraved on the reverse of the coin.
The Native American Mint is located in California and is overseen by the Jamul Sovereign Nation, who produce the coins in this series on behalf of the tribes that are being represented.
