Obverse
The obverse side of 2020 Proof Mexican Libertad 2 oz Silver Coins features the image of Winged Victory. The image of Winged Victory first appeared on Mexican coinage in 1921 when her figure was issued on the gold Centenario, a 50 peso gold circulation coin honoring 100 years of independence. This modern depiction of Victory is based on her statue from the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column.
Reverse
On the reverse of each 2020 Proof Mexican Libertad 2 oz Silver Coin are several versions of the Mexican Coat of Arms. The central, larger design, is the modern version of the seal with the powerful golden eagle battling with a serpent on a cactus. Around the outer edge of the design field, you will find a circle of 10 different historic versions of this same seal.
History
Proof Mexican Libertad Silver Coins debuted for annual release starting in 1986 with the 1 oz silver coin. Available weights expanded in 1991 to include four fractional-ounce coins and again in 1996 to feature these 2 oz silver coins and the 5 oz silver coin. In 2015, a reverse proof silver coin debuted in 1 oz silver. The reverse proof expanded to the 2 oz and 5 oz coins in 2017, followed by the introduction of an antique version in all three weights in 2018.
