On the obverse of the 2020 Rwandan Mayflower Nautical Ounce 1 oz Silver Coin is the image of the Mayflower sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. The Mayflower crossed the Atlantic from Plymouth, England, to what is now known as Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in two months in the fall of 1620. The 102 passengers on board the ship were English Puritans, followers of the Church of England who believed the Crown and church had failed to wipe out the last vestiges of Catholicism within the Protestant faith of the church.

The reverse side of 2020 Rwandan Mayflower Nautical Ounce 1 oz Silver Coins includes a depiction of the Rwandan coat of arms. The coat of arms includes a traditional bucket, sorghum branch, coffee bundle, and shields on the flanks. The coins in this series are backed by the Central Bank of Rwanda and inscriptions on this side of the coin are all in Kinyarwanda, the official native tongue of Rwandas indigenous people.

The Mayflower that carried the Puritans from England to America is just one of 26 vessels given this name during the reign of King James I of England between 1603 and 1625. This particular Mayflower was built in Harwich, Essex, England, in 1609 and made its maiden voyage as a charter trip to Trondheim, Norway, to bring a load of herring back to London. The ship is also known to have taken cross-Channel voyages to France with English linens, bringing back French wines. Records suggest it may have also gone on whaling voyages in the North Atlantic as far as Greenland and sailed to ports along the Iberian Peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea as well. All this was before its voyage across the Atlantic to the New World.
