The San Francisco Mint was the original coining facility for all versions of the American Eagle Silver Coin when the series launched in 1986. The BU American Eagle was struck at San Francisco from 1986 to 1998 and the Proof American Eagle from 1986 to 1992. The San Francisco Mint wouldnt strike another American Eagle until it began providing supplemental coining for the BU Series in 2011 and issued a Proof coin that same year to mark the 25th anniversary of the series. Since 2018, it has been an annual tradition to offer an additional Proof American Eagle from San Francisco alongside the West Point specimen.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 2020-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins is Walking Liberty. This historic design shows Liberty walking toward the sun as it rises above a mountain on the horizon. Her right hand reaches out toward the sun with her left carrying branches of oak and laurel. The American flag is draped around her figure. The inscriptions on this side include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2020.

Reverse

The reverse face of 2020-S Proof American Eagle Silver Coins comes with the heraldic eagle. This is the final S-Proof that will feature the heraldic eagle as the design is being replaced in 2021 with a new bald eagle design. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, 1 oz. Fine Silver – One Dollar, and the S mint mark from the San Francisco Mint.

History

Only 200,000 S-Proofs were issued in 2020 by the San Francisco Mint. With S-Proof coins typically released later in the calendar year, this is the final date mark that will feature the heraldic eagle design on the reverse. By mid-2021, all 2021-dated American Eagle Silver Coins will have the new reverse design. Early 2021 issues of the BU and W-Proof coins will continue with the heraldic eagle design before changing over.
