In 1986 when the gold coins debuted, Lady Liberty was on the obverse with an exclusive image of a family of American bald eagles on the reverse. While a new design is set to debut in mid-2021, the historic bald eagle design will continue in use on the initial 2021 American Eagle Gold Coin releases.

Lady Liberty dominates the obverse field of the 2021 American Eagle Gold Coins. The design element depicts Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer with a large torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other hand. The US Capitol Building is visible near her feet in the background field with rays of sunshine framing her figure from behind as a ring of 50 stars encircles the entire design element. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include Liberty and 2021.

Reverse

For the final time in the American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Series, the 2021 American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coins reverse field features the image of a family of American bald eagles. In this design, the male eagle is shown flying over the family nest as a female eagle uses her wing to shelter a young hatchling. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, and 1/10 oz Fine Gold 5 Dollars.

History

Since 1986, the United States Mint has used the same obverse-reverse design combinations on its American Eagle Silver and American Eagle Gold Coins. Both coins will receive new reverse designs by mid-2021, making the 2021 release of the coins the only date mark to feature two separate reverse designs.
