Obverse
Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse side of 2021 American Eagle Gold Type 2 Coins. This design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens comes with an image of Lady Liberty. Designed for the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin in 1907, the design shows Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks toward you holding an olive branch in her left hand and a torch in her right hand. The U.S. Capitol Building is depicted near her feet, with sun rays behind her figure and a ring of 50 stars around the frame. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include LIBERTY and 2021.
Reverse
An all-new image of the American bald eagle is found on the reverse face of 2021 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Type 2 Coins. This shows the bald eagle in left-profile relief with incredible detail in its plumage, its piercing gaze included, and a hooked beak. The inscriptions on this field of the coin read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 10 DOLLARS.
History
Jennie Norris is the designer of the new reverse field on the American Eagle Gold Coin. An accomplished graphic designer, Ms. Norris is a professor at the University of Arizona and also serves as a member of the United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program.
