Available since 1986, the American Eagle Gold Coins represent one of the many global gold bullion coin programs with the same, static designs on the obverse and reverse each year. Only minor design changes have ever come to the American Eagle Gold Series prior to 2021, but with the 35th anniversary of the series marked by the 2021 release, the United States Mint has a dramatic change in mind for the series. In a program first, the American Eagle Gold Coin is getting a new design element on its reverse field in 2021. Created by Jennie Norris and capturing the natural power of the bald eagle, the new design will be released on 2021-dated coins produced from mid-2021 onward. The original designs are still available on the initial release of 2021-dated American Eagle Gold Coins listed now at Provident Metals, but you can expect to see the new American Eagle Gold Coins available for presale on our site by early Summer 2021. Take a moment and learn a bit more about the upcoming design change.
In the new reverse design of 2021 American Eagle Gold Coins, Jennie Norris has developed a design that focuses on the head of the eagle. The bald eagles head is shown in left-profile relief in the design element with its steely gaze focused on the horizon. The powerful, hooked beak of the bald eagle is featured on this side and is one of its most potent weapons when battling its prey. As with the new silver coin design, the gold coin design features rearranged inscriptions. At the top of the design field, there are inscriptions in descending order of United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and In God We Trust. The 3 oclock and 9 oclock positions on the design edge have three stars and the bottom edge of the design field includes an inscription of 50 Dolars 1 oz Fine Gold.
American Eagle Gold Coins, unlike American Eagle Silver Coins, have had one minor design change in the past, with the Roman numeral date marks used from 1986 to 1991 replaced in 1992 with Arabic numerals. Other fun facts about the American Eagle Gold Coin:
