The release of 2021 American Eagle Silver Coins from the United States Mint brings with it the first-ever redesign of the coins in the 35-year history of the series. Since 1986, the US Mint has maintained the same obverse and reverse designs in the collection. To mark the 35th anniversary of the series in 2021 and position the program for the future, the US Mint is unveiling new reverse images of the bald eagle on its American Eagle Silver and Gold Coins. The coins of the American Eagle Silver Series ship with protective plastic flips for individual coins. Multiples of 20 coins are available in acrylic tubes. Multiples of 500 are available in Monster Boxes with a total of 25 individual tubes inside of the box.

Obverse

Walking Liberty graces the obverse side of 2021 American Eagle Silver Type 2 Coins. The classic design from Adolph A. Weinman shows Liberty walking toward the sun on the horizon with the American flag draped around her figure. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2021. Beneath the “In God We Trust” inscription, you will find Weinman’s artistic signature mark that consists of his “AW” initials.

Reverse

A new depiction of the American bald eagle is found on the reverse of 2021 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Type 2 Coins. Created by Emily Damstra, this new design shows a bald eagle as it swoops down through the design field. The eagle has its wings swept back behind its back with a large oak branch in its talons. The inscriptions on this side of the coin remain the same, but are repositioned to work with the new design element. These include United States of America along the left side of the design rocker from roughly 7 oclock to 1 oclock positions. Along the lower-right rocker are inscriptions of One Dollar and 1 oz. Fine Silver. Set within the design field above the lower-right rocker is the inscription of E Pluribus Unum directly beneath the eagle.

History

Emily Damstra is the designer of the new American Eagle Silver Type 2 Coins. Ms. Damstra has an M.F.A. from the University of Michigan and is a long-time resident of the Great Lakes Region. Her love of wildlife comes through in the design of the bald eagle on the new 2021 Type 2 design in the American Eagle Silver Series. Her previous contributions to wildlife coinage include the final two designs of the Royal Canadian Mints Canadian Wildlife Series in 2013 and the four coins of the Birds of Prey Series.
