History

The Kingdom of Breifne emerged from the broader Kingdom of Connacht. The latter kingdom occupied vast stretches along the northern half of Irelands western coast. The Ui Briuin branch of the royal family from Connacht conquered and settled the lands that would go on to form the Kingdom of Breifne. At its height, Breifne occupied all of modern-day County Leitrim and County Cavan, as well as parts of Longford, Meath, Fermanagh, and Sligo. In 1256, conflict between the ruling ORourke clans and their vassals, the OReillys, resulted in the kingdoms split into West Breifne and East Breifne.
