It’s hard to say when the very first Dalmatian hunting and working dogs were bred, although the first known record of them in writing dates back to the 14th century. What’s certain is that they’ve been around for centuries, that they have nearly always been popular with those they came in contact with, and that they are indigenous to Croatia. The latter fact is commemorated by the 2021 Croatia Dalmatian Dog 1/4 oz Gold Coin, now available from Provident Metals.
Part of a group of limited mintages issued as part of the Autochtonous Croatia series by the Croatian National Bank and the Croatian Mint, the 2021 Croatia Dalmatian Dog Gold Coin makes an excellent gift for collectors or special occasions. It features exquisite artwork and a gorgeous brilliant uncirculated finish, and comes in themed box packaging with its own sturdy and attractive protective case. Provident Metals ships this item to you fully insured and with a signed Certificate of Authenticity from the governor of the Croatian National Bank.
A profile portrait of a Dalmatian dog, rendered by medallic artist Nikola Vurag, is featured on the coin’s obverse side. It is stylized to represent Croatia’s geographic identity, with its distinctive spots representing Croatia’s coastal islands and a backdrop comprised of sea waves and a map of the mainland. These elements are accompanied by a coat of arms, the Cyrillic inscription “150 kuna,” and the official country name “Republika Hrvatska.”
A pair of sleek Dalmatian dogs, posed one in front of the other, are featured on the coin’s reverse. They’re joined by inscriptions for the year of issue, “2021,” and the breed names “Dalmatinski Pas” and “Canis Dalmaticus.”
Dalmatian dogs attained their first fame as hunting dogs who made ideal companions for both horses and their human owners. Over the years, they grew popular on the highways of Europe as guard dogs for coach drivers and carriages, with their alert nature helping them to ward off bandits and their native speed and stamina helping them keep pace on multi-mile journeys. The international Cynological Foundation finally certified the breed as autochthonous to Croatia in 1994.
