Silver dollar coining in the United States was rather disjointed over the course of its history. The earliest silver dollar was issued in 1804, but regular production on an annual basis didnt begin until 1838 and the release of the Seated Liberty Dollar. That program ended in 1873, with a five-year break in coining before the Morgan Dollar was issued in 1878. Struck through 1904, there was then a 17-year break in silver dollar production until 1921.

Obverse

On the obverse of 2021 Peace Dollar Silver Coins is an effigy of Liberty. This left-profile portrait shows Liberty with a towering crown that looks almost like sun rays coming from her head. The design shows Libertys face with softer features and hair that is blowing freely in the wind. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRVST, and 2021. The use of a V in TRUST instead of a U is consistent with the original 1921 Peace Dollar Silver Coins.

Reverse

The reverse side of 2021 Peace Dollar Coins comes with a depiction of the American bald eagle. Showcased at rest, the eagle is perched on an olive branch with its wings at its side as the rays of the sun emerge on the horizon. The inscriptions on this side of the coin read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, and PEACE.

History

With the return of silver dollars in 1921, the disjointed production of the coins would continue. Morgan Dollars were issued until December, with Peace Dollars going into production starting December 27th. The Peace Dollar was then issued from 1921 to 1928, and again in 1934 and 1935. The Peace Dollar was the last 90% silver dollar coin in circulation in the United States.
