History
The Royal Dutch Mint opened in Utrecht in 1567, making it one of the oldest businesses in the history of the Netherlands. As was common back then, there were numerous operating mints in the different provinces. However, following an 1806 decree from Napoleon Bonaparte, this Middle Ages tradition would end and be replaced by a single national mint responsible for all currency in the Netherlands. The original Royal Dutch Mint location in Utrecht was chosen to represent the entire Dutch region, creating a national minting tradition that continues to this day.
