Obverse

The obverse face of the 2021 Somalia Elephant Silver Coins showcases the national coat of arms for the Somali Republic. The national seal features a crowned shield with a background field of horizontal lines and a single star. The shield is flanked by leopards on each side with crossed spears and fern leaves below draped in a ribbon. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read Somali Republic, 2021, and 100 Shillings.

Reverse

On the reverse side of 2021 Somalia Elephant 1 oz Silver Coins is an image of the African bush elephant. The elephant is shown in a close-up relief with its massive tusks and long trunk pushing toward the viewer in the design element. With a few leaves on a tree just over its head and a bird flying higher overhead, the design element captures the elephant in its natural setting. The inscriptions around the design elements include African Wildlife, Elephant, and 1 oz Ag 999.9.

History

The African bush elephant is one of three living species of elephant in the world today. Two of those species, the bush elephant and forest elephant, live on the African continent. The other species is located in Southeast and East Asia. The African bush elephant is the largest living land mammal in the world, followed by the forest elephant and Asian elephant, respectively.
