Obverse

An African bush elephant is found on the obverse side of the 2021 South African Big Five Series II Elephant Silver Coins. The elephant is shown in a slight right-profile relief with curled tusks and its trunk looping down and back into the design field. The South African coat of arms is featured beneath the image of the elephant with inscriptions of SOUTH AFRICA, BIG FIVE, and 2021.

Reverse

Two elephants are shown in the reverse design of 2021 South African Big Five Series II Elephant 1 oz Silver coins. This is the same design that featured on the reverse of the Big Series Five collection in 2019. It shows the faces of two elephants close together in the foreground with inscriptions at the center that include FIVE RAND, 1 OZ, and AG 999.

History

The African elephant has long featured on the currency of South Africa. Since 1988, the African elephant and other creatures from the Big Five Series II collection have been shown on paper notes from South Africa. This series is a product of the South African Mint, the national mint that is owned by the South African Reserve Bank.
